Abstract:
The Protector of Citizens is a relatively new Institute in the legal system of the Republic of Serbia. For the first time in Serbia, the institution of the Protector of Citizens appeared in 2002, both at the local and autonomy level. In fact, this national body is a well-known institution for the protection of the rights of citizens which origins goes to the world known Swedish reality - Ombudsman. In 2005 the Law of the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia introduced state institution of the Protector of Citizen and in 2006 the constitutional article 138 empowered the Protector of Citizens as a constitutional institution. Thus, this constitutional-legal institution has been in force in Serbia for fifteen years. This article presents the analysis of the legal status and powers of the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia.
