Abstract:

The article analyses the observation of the clergymen about the Mordvins, collected in their wards. Materials have been published in the unofficial part of Penza, Tambov, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and other eparchial records of the second half of the XIXth century. They contain data on various aspects of peasant life as a certain "reserve venue" of concentration of all materials to explore the past and present of the area in which they were published. Very detailed factual information about the Mordvins is contained in the publications of K. S. Milkovich, M. M. Grebnev, V. A. Aunovsky, N. P. Orlov, N. Fedorov, M. M. Popov, M. Burdukov etc.
