The governmental laws related to the Cossacks represent an extremely interesting realm for an inter-subject study at the crossing point of history and law science. The peculiar feature of studies of this kind is how difficult it is to apply the methodological instruments, as the processes have to be traced in their deep and genetic correlations, with the dominating ideological guidelines overturned. In this article, the author makes an attempt to throw light upon those processes, considering all their contradictions and diversity but avoiding any one-sided or polar judgments.
