MANIPULATIONS IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE: «INFORMATION WAR» IN THE GEORGIAN-OSSETIAN CONFLICT IN AUGUST 2008 IN RUSSIAN AND AMERICAN MASS MEDIA

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the issues of the interpretation of the policy of the parties involved in the resolution of the armed conflict in South Ossetia in August 2008. For the study, the author conducted a discourse analysis of the most actively working publications during the hot phase of the conflict, such as «New York Times» and «Washington Post» - in the United States, as well as «Izvestia» and «Arguments and facts» - in Russia. The main aspects of the military conflict are correlated from the understanding of the initiator of military actions in the representation of those and other media, to the ideas about the consequences of this crisis in the position of Russian and American sources. Conclusions are made about the return of the discourse peculiar to the «cold war» and the introduction of psychological elements influence the opponents through special contextualization with the idea of the aggressive image of the opponent, what was happening in mutual mode. There is aт erosion of the information field of the facts of the events in favor of interpretations with the involvement of geopolitical and world political aspects for the approval of their own values from both American and Russian sides. The practical significance of the study is the possibility of using in-depth analysis of the press in other important events, taking into account the ideological aspects of the information confrontation for an objective interpretation of the facts. The impact of the information war has led to an aggravation of geopolitical confrontation between the two centers of power of world politics - Russia and the United States, which caused the emergence of new hotbeds of tension in the post-Soviet space (Ukraine) and beyond (Syria). The originality of the work consists in a mirror comparison of the equivalent status of the print media from the two sides in the information confrontation during the crisis.
