Abstract:
The Constitution of 1888 was the first Constitutional Act of the independent Kingdom of Serbia. It was the adoption of the Constitution of 1888 that marked the beginning of the era of parliamentarism in Serbia. In accordance with Article 1 of the Constitution, the Kingdom of Serbia was a constitutional monarchy with the People's Representation. In the new Constitution, the prerogatives of the king narrowed considerably compared to the previous Serbian constitutions. Nevertheless, the monarch continued to play a significant role in the exercise of state power in Serbia. This article presents a legal analysis of the institution of the monarchy under the Constitution of 1888.
