Abstract:
The article deals with the historical prerequisites for the emergence of deprivation of liberty as a form of criminal punishment, as well as the factors that conditioned its formation. It is concluded that this type of punishment did not appear immediately, but has its own history. The appearance of a criminal penalty in the form of deprivation of liberty is connected with the state's need to isolate the objectionable persons, as well as their punishment.
