Abstract:
On May 9, 1894, the King of Serbia, Alexander 1 Obrenovic, abolished the liberal Constitution of 1888 and restored the more authoritarian Constitution of 1869. With the abrogation of the Constitution of 1888, all the laws adopted to fulfill it and layed the foundation of parliamentarism in the state were also abolished. In 1898 a number of reactionary laws were adopted, in particular, the Law on Associations, the Law on Press, the Law on Elections. The regime of personal power of King Alexander 1 Obrenovic was established in the state. However, the external threats, the frequent change of governments, growing economic instability, as well as the opposition of the radicals forced the king Alexander to octroy relatively liberal Constitution of 1901, the so-called "April Constitution". This article presents a legal analysis of the institution of the monarchy in Serbia according to the Constitution of 1901.
