Abstract:
Based on documents from the Russian State Archive of Economics, biographies and memoirs of veterans of the renowned university, information from the Tyumen Industrial University's websites, newspapers, and magazines, this article examines the transformation of a provincial university into a leading center for training engineering personnel for the domestic oil and gas industry. The biographies of the founders and leading scientists of the Tyumen Industrial Institute have been re-examined and updated, and inaccuracies in memoirs replicated in both scientific publications and print media outlets dedicated to the university have been corrected. Little-known chapters in the history of this center for training specialists for the country's oil and gas industry are revealed. The collected materials confirm the difficulties of the institute's inception and more fully reveal the role of its pioneering founders in overcoming the challenges of opening it in a provincial town. The article's authors introduce the leading scientific schools of the institute, which has elevated its status to university, and recount the achievements of its renowned graduates. They reveal the reasons for the successful development of the university, which few believed in at the outset, and showcase the traditions of Tyumen's engineering talent pool. In preparing this article, a historical and biographical method was used, which allowed us not only to reconstruct individual, previously unknown circumstances and facts of the institute's formation, but also, through the biographies of the university's founders and professors, to more fully present the overall picture of the institute's history.
