Culture of Sverdlovsk in the Era of the 1930s: Transition to the “Socialist Realism”

The paper analyzes the cultural transformations that took place in Sverdlovsk in the 1930s, which was the administrative and political center of the Ural Region (until 1934) and then the Sverdlovsk region during this period. The paper notes that the growth of spiritual potential of this city took place in the difficult and contradictory conditions of transition of the Soviet culture to the rails of “socialist realism”, which demanded from literary and artistic figures unconditional recognition and devoted service to the ideology of building a “new society”. The paper shows the restructuring of the work of writers, artists, musicians, theater and cinema figures in Sverdlovsk in accordance with the decisions of the VKP(b), which led to the unification of all cultural processes based on strengthening the centralization of management and strengthening Party-State control over them. The paper concludes that the creative intellectuals of Sverdlovsk has overwhelmingly adopted the ideology of the Soviet political regime. Therefore, most of the works of literature and art created by its representatives in the 1930s fully met the basic criteria of “socialist realism”, which strengthened the position of the Soviet government.
