Abstract:
The paper is devoted to the consideration of the potential of historical representations of the «Stalin era» existing in the modern historiographical space as one of the relevant elements of the creation of national identity and the formation of collective memory in modern Russian society. Three macro-historical approaches (formational, civilizational, and modernization paradigms) are analyzed, along which conceptual explanations are created, meanings, ideas, and images that serve to substantiate and legitimize the historical memory of a key period of Soviet history are identified and translated. The paradigmatic dimension of the «Stalinist period» of history allows us to reveal the complexity of this historical phenomenon from a macro-theoretical perspective, to identify the constants of historical memory that are important for preserving and broadcasting at the level of discourses and narratives, while for seven decades historians have been unable to reach a consensus understanding of the fundamental importance of this era in the continuum of Russian civilization, the modernization process and the dichotomy. capitalism is socialism.
