Abstract:
Archival materials introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time reveal the contents of correspondence from 1923–1924 concerning the proposed transfer of the Yegoryevsk Vicariate from the jurisdiction of the Ryazan Diocese to that of Moscow. These documents provide insight into how issues of diocesan boundaries and the subordination of vicariates were resolved in the post-revolutionary period, as well as how ecclesiastical decisions related to the administrative-territorial transformations of the region. Despite extensive historiography on state-church relations, the topic of inter-diocesan interaction and its documentary formalization remains understudied. The aim of this article is to reconstruct, using the discussion on the transfer of the Yegoryevsk Vicariate as a case study, the process by which administrative decisions were made and documented in church governance during the early Soviet period. The value of the sources under consideration is determined by the uniqueness of the described case, which stands as the only documented example of such a procedure within the Moscow Diocese. The conducted analysis has shown that in 1924, the Yegoryevsk Vicariate remained part of the Ryazan Diocese. The case materials contain no information regarding the date or circumstances of its subsequent transfer2.
