ON THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF UKRAINE'S FOREIGN POLICY IN RELATION TO THE CRIMEA

The Crimean peninsula has a long and varied history. Located in the south of the Azov-Black Sea steppes, which for millennia were a territory of nomads, Crimea was a territory for temporary residence for many peoples. Some of them stayed on the peninsula for a long time, and for the Crimean-Tatar people Crimea became the territory of the formation of its statehood. On the other hand, Crimea was the object of encroachment of many empires - old and new. In ancient times it was inhabited by Greeks and Romans, in medieval times - the Genoese and Turks built their fortresses, in a new and modern era Crimea became part of two empires - first the Russian, then - the Soviet Union. Since the territory of the Crimean peninsula borders with the Ukrainian territory, the historical destinies of Ukraine and Crimea have been intertwined for many centuries. The article examines the political relations between Crimea and Kiev after Ukraine proclaimed state sovereignty in July 1990, as it was these relations that led to the holding of the Crimean referendum on the status of autonomy and expansion of its powers in March 2014.
