Abstract:
The Constitution of 2006 established the modern legal basis for local self-government in the Republic of Serbia. In accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia citizens have the right to regional autonomy and local self-government, which they exercise directly or through their freely elected representatives. In the Republic of Serbia, there is a one-level local self-government with a municipality as the main territorial unit in which local self-government is exercised, and within this framework special solutions are provided for cities and the city of Belgrade. Local government units in Serbia autonomously regulate the structure and powers of their bodies and public services in accordance with the Constitution and law. Analysis of the constitutional foundations of local self-government in the Republic of Serbia is presented in this article.
