The main task of the article is to show the peculiarities of the geopolitical situation in the Arctic, to identify the main threats to the national security of the Russian Federation and trends in the development of the region. Methodology and sources: the study based on the study of periodicals printed magazines, as well as materials, laid out in open access on the Internet. The analysis of the instruments of international Arctic law with regard to national strategies for the development of the Arctic. Conclusions: analysis of the situation showed that Russia has no permanent and reliable allies in the Arctic. In the Arctic will increase geopolitical, geoeconomical contradictions. For Russia it is strategically important to increase its presence in the Arctic, and actively introduce and develop the technology of extraction and transportation of hydrocarbons from shelf to ensure the flow of investments in Arctic projects, actively develop the infrastructure and to tackle socio-economic problems of the region. Significance: the findings can be used in the work of the authors studying the problems of the Russian Arctic. In the practical field the findings of the study can be applied in the spheres of the state policy of the Russian Federation in the Arctic.
