Abstract:
In the paper, on the basis of the study of Isaac Newton’s archival manuscripts, an analysis of the viewpoint of the English scientist on the architecture and rituals of the Jerusalem Temple in connection with the possible interpretation of the Apocalypse, is carried out. It is stated that Newton developed a unique idea in the context of hermeneutics of the Apocalypse, according to which all events of the Revelation took place in the Temple of Jerusalem. It is shewn that, according to Newton, the scheme of the Revelation of St John is a vision of the prophet about the events in the physical space of the Temple, but reported to the readers in a mysterious, encrypted form, and that is made to hide the description of the main events of Apocalyptic history from the uninitiated public. The reconstruction of the architecture of the Jerusalem Temple by Newton is studied and its direct connection with the visions of the Apocalypse is demonstrated. In the context of this study, the hermeneutics of Newton can be attributed to the Judeo-Christian tradition. Additionally it is noted that the subsequent use of Newton’s achievements in the tradition of European Freemasonry took place. To establish the exact size and proportions of the Temple, Isaac Newton explored the measure of the sacred Jewish cubit. One of Newton’s most significant findings is his historiographical proof of the differentiation between ordinary cubit and sacred cubit of the Jews, as well as cubits and other standard measure units of different peoples.
