Abstract:
Dmitry V. Golubyatnikov (1866-1933) is a distinguished petroleum geologist of the Geological Committee, Professor of the Moscow mining Academy, chief geologist of the Central management of the oil industry of SBNE of the USSR. In 1903 the Geological Committee began work in the oil-rich areas. D. V. Golubyatnikov was sent to the Absheron Peninsula. He was a consistent proponent of applying the scientific approach in petroleum geology. Many practical recommendations and forward-looking assessment of the prospects of oil production emerged from this approach. Golubyatnikov acquainted with the geological literature and cartographic materials of the Absheron Peninsula and was struck by the lack of a developed stratigraphic section of the Peninsula and the lack of paleontological data on the stratigraphic units. Inspection of the oil-rich areas, for which detailed geological maps were published, showed that the information available in the published sources is largely at odds with reality and cannot be summarized; obvious discrepancies with the age of different stratigraphic horizons were found. Justification of the comparative reliability of individual sections of the peninsula required a geological basis in the form of a consolidated stratigraphic section and a geological map. With the aim of making the incision of the Peninsula Golubyatnikov turned to the prospecting of outcrops. The tunnel, 2715 m long, exposed the entire series of rocks of the Absheron layer. The fauna found here allowed Golubyatnikov to distinguish three horizons of the stage according to the species of mollusks. This scheme still underlies at the core of the sections of the Absheron layer. Golubyatnikov's stratigraphic discoveries turned out to be a lot, and they made it possible to understand the complex geology of promising areas. Golubyatnikov set himself the goal not only to create a detailed geological map of the entire territory of the Absheron Peninsula, but also to draw up special, specialized layer maps. Many people were already talking about them then, but in fact no one had any idea what they were. Only after Golubyatnikov's work were methods found for depicting the structure of the subsoil using maps of underground relief (structural) and detailed normal sections and profiles showing individual layers. Such graphic images have proven to be extremely useful for oil practitioners in order to understand the cross-section of oil-bearing and aquifers. The reference horizons of the section identified by Golubyatnikov really helped to decipher the whimsical web of layers. Works on the study of the geology of oil fields in Azerbaijan D.V. Golubyatnikov began almost from virgin soil. In the process of these works, he laid the foundation for that branch of oil geology, which was named oilfield. Golubyatnikov was a pioneer in the field of creating concrete ideas about the structure of the subsoil of oil fields, in the matter of their graphic representation, separation of oil and gas reservoirs, revealing the connection between individual members of the stratigraphic section, their structural forms and oil distribution, geothermal and hydrochemical studies of oil fields. The core of his approach was the compilation of detailed reservoir maps of oil reservoirs, and then atlases, which became an innovation in the world of petroleum geology. By painstakingly studying hundreds of wells in the Absheron oil fields, the peculiarities of oil-bearing strata, the chemical composition of oil, its physical properties and deviations, he actually created the science of oil geology. The richest oil province of Azerbaijan abounded in the whimsical structure of oil reservoirs and often missed some of them when searching. This required special techniques and technologies, which were proposed by D.V. Golubyatnikov. Golubyatnikov's bold and well-grounded forecasts - Baby-Heybat, Surakhany, Kobistan - have dramatically increased the oil potential of Azerbaijan.
